Meditation inquiry questions are like journeys inward. They’re sparks that ignite my mindfulness, helping me delve deeper into my thoughts. During or after meditation, I ask myself these questions to explore my thoughts, feelings, and experiences with curiosity and without judgment. It’s like an expedition within myself, discovering new facets of my being with each question. I’ve categorized these questions based on the areas I want to focus on:”

1.Self-Awareness and Presence

These questions help you tune into the present moment and your inner state.

  • What am I feeling right now, and where do I feel it in my body?
  • What thoughts are passing through my mind in this moment?
  • Am I resisting or clinging to anything right now?
  • What happens when I simply allow myself to be as I am?
  • Can I observe my breath without trying to change it?
  • How does this moment feel if I let go of judgment?

2.Emotional Awareness

Explore your emotions and develop a deeper understanding of them.

  • What emotions are present right now, and can I name them?
  • What is the texture, shape, or energy of this emotion in my body?
  • What happens when I sit with this feeling instead of trying to fix or avoid it?
  • Is this emotion permanent, or does it change as I observe it?
  • What would it feel like to simply allow this emotion to exist?

Examine your thoughts and the stories your mind creates.

  • What stories or narratives is my mind creating right now?
  • Are these thoughts true, or are they assumptions or fears?
  • Who or what is observing these thoughts as they arise and pass?
  • What happens when I stop identifying with these thoughts?
  • Can I let this thought go, or does it hold onto me?

4.Compassion and Self-Compassion

Cultivate kindness and acceptance toward yourself and others.

  • How can I bring kindness to this moment?
  • What would I say to a dear friend who is feeling this way?
  • Can I forgive myself for being imperfect, just like everyone else?
  • How can I show myself loving-kindness right now?
  • Who or what in my life am I grateful for in this moment?

5.Body Awareness

Deepen your connection to your physical sensations and body.

  • What sensations do I notice in my body right now?
  • Are there areas of tension, and can I release them with my breath?
  • How does my body feel as I inhale? How does it feel as I exhale?
  • Where do I feel the most grounded or stable in my body?
  • Can I feel the aliveness in my hands, feet, or heart?

6.Letting Go

Explore attachment, resistance, and surrender.

  • What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?
  • Can I let go of the need to control this moment?
  • What would it feel like to release this thought, emotion, or tension?
  • What is here when I let go of striving or effort?
  • Can I trust this moment to unfold as it is?

7.Meaning and Purpose

Reflect on your values, intentions, and life purpose.

  • What truly matters to me in this moment?
  • Am I living in alignment with my deepest values?
  • What intention would I like to set for today or this practice?
  • What brings me a sense of meaning or fulfillment?
  • How can I bring more mindfulness into my daily life?

8.Interconnection and Unity

Explore your connection to others and the world around you.

  • How am I connected to the people and world around me?
  • Can I sense the interconnectedness of all life in this moment?
  • What would it feel like to embrace everything, just as it is?
  • How can I bring more compassion to others and myself?
  • Who or what do I feel connected to right now?

9.Dealing With Challenges

Work through difficult emotions, thoughts, and situations.

  • What is the source of my discomfort or resistance right now?
  • Can I face this difficulty with curiosity instead of fear or avoidance?
  • What might this challenge be teaching me?
  • How can I respond to this situation with kindness and wisdom?
  • If I let go of my resistance, what remains?

10.Awareness of Self and Identity

Dive into the nature of self and consciousness.

  • Who am I beyond my thoughts, feelings, and roles?
  • What is aware of my thoughts and sensations right now?
  • Is there a “self” that remains constant, or is it always changing?
  • What is the nature of the observer within me?
  • What happens when I stop trying to define myself?

How to Use Meditation Inquiry Questions

  • During Meditation: Gently introduce one question into your practice and sit with it, allowing the answer to arise naturally without forcing it.
  • Post-Meditation Reflection: After your session, journal your responses to the questions to deepen your understanding.
  • Daily Practice: Choose a question to carry with you throughout the day, reflecting on it during moments of stillness.

These questions are not meant to have definitive answers but to guide you toward a deeper awareness of yourself and your experience. Approach them with curiosity and openness, allowing them to enrich your meditation practice.
